JokiPrivacy Policy

This policy explains what information the Joki app ("Joki", "we", "us") collects, why, who helps us process it, and how you can delete it. It applies to the Joki app and this website.
In short: we collect what we need to run your account and remember your learning. We don't sell your data, and there are no ads in Joki.
Information we collect
Your account
- Email and password sign-in: your email address and password. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider (Supabase) and are never stored in plain text.
- Sign in with Apple or Google: the email address and account identifier that Apple or Google shares with us when you choose to sign in that way. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we only receive the relay address.
Your learning preferences
The answers you give when you first set up Joki are saved to your account: your French level, daily goal, streak goal, why you're learning, what you find hard, the reminder time you picked (if any), and how you heard about Joki (if you answered). We use them to choose videos for your level and to show your goals in the app.
Your learning activity
- Words you save, with the sentence and video they came from, and their review schedule.
- Videos you save.
- Which clips you have watched and when, and how much time you spend watching, so we can show your history, daily goal, streak and progress, and avoid showing you the same clips again.
Word lookups and questions
When you tap a word, the app sends the word and the sentence it appears in to our server, which asks OpenAI to write the explanation you see. If you ask a follow-up question about a word, your question and the conversation about that word are sent the same way. We don't send your name or email address with these requests. Please don't type personal information into questions.
Subscriptions
Payments are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions: it receives your Joki account identifier and the purchase information Apple provides. We keep a copy of your subscription status (for example the plan, whether it is in a trial, active or expired, renewal and expiry dates, the store, and the account email at the time) so our server can tell whether you have Premium.
Information kept on your device
The app keeps some data on your phone so it opens quickly and works smoothly: your sign-in session, a copy of your saved lists, your setup answers until you create an account, and a few app preferences.
Notifications
If you allow it, Joki schedules a daily practice reminder on your device at the time you chose. These reminders are created locally on your phone. We don't use a push notification service and don't collect a push token.
Videos from YouTube
The videos in Joki are played with YouTube's embedded player. When you watch a clip, your device connects to YouTube, and YouTube (Google) may collect information such as your IP address and device details under its own terms and privacy policy. Analytics
Joki does not currently use third-party analytics or advertising tools. We may add privacy-conscious product analytics in the future to understand how the app is used and to improve it. If we do, we will update this policy before it goes live.
How we use your information
- To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
- To show videos that match your level and interests, and to keep your saved words, videos, history and progress in sync across your devices.
- To explain words and answer your questions about them.
- To check whether you have Premium.
- To reply when you contact us.
We don't sell your personal information and we don't use it for advertising.
Who processes your data
- Supabase: sign-in and our database, where your account and learning data are stored.
- OpenAI: generates word explanations and answers to your questions.
- RevenueCat and Apple: subscriptions and payments.
- Apple and Google: if you choose to sign in with them.
- YouTube (Google): plays the videos.
Each of these services processes data under its own terms. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
Keeping your data and deleting it
We keep your data for as long as you have a Joki account. You can delete your account at any time in the app: go to Profile → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account together with your saved words, saved videos, watch history, watch time, setup answers and our copy of your subscription status. It cannot be undone.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription, because Apple bills it. Cancel it in your iPhone's Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
To remove the data kept on your phone, uninstall the app. You can also ask us to delete your account by email (see below).
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). In our database, each account can only read and change its own learning data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or to object to how we use it. Email us and we'll help.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes we'll let you know in the app.
